TRAFFIC RULES IN BELGIUM

Belgium boasts a well-developed, high-quality road network, but it enforces traffic rules, particularly speed limits, very strictly. To ensure a trouble-free visit, here are some key tips to avoid fines while driving in Belgium:

Speed limits

Speed checks are frequent in Belgium, with police and automated cameras monitoring various road sections, including tunnels. To avoid fines, always adhere to the speed limits.

  • Highways: 120 km/h
  • Roads: 90 km/h
  • Cities: 50 km/h

Tolls/vignettes

Good news! For vehicles weighing up to 3.5 tonnes, there are no tolls or motorway charges in Belgium.

Alcohol limit

The legal blood alcohol limit is 0.5 mg/ml, equivalent to 0.22 mg in a breath test. If your breath alcohol level falls between 0.22 and 0.35 mg, the police may ask you to retake the test after 15 minutes. A level above 0.35 mg is considered positive, and if confirmed by a second test, blood may be drawn. If your blood alcohol level exceeds 0.65 mg, your licence can be suspended for up to 15 days, and you may face a court case and a potential long-term driving ban. It’s best not to drive unless you’re sure you are below the legal limit.

What to do if you’re fined

Belgian police are strict and serious about enforcing fines. Avoid arguing over the amount and never attempt to bribe an officer. Always pay fines, even if they arrive later via automated speed checks. Failure to do so may result in higher penalties or even vehicle confiscation on your next visit.
